62 diaries and 5 letterbooks kept by J.J. Walworth, manufacturer, businessman, and the first to introduce steam heating to America. Formed with his brother-in-law Joseph Nason in New York in 1841 and in Boston in 1842, the firm of Walworth & Nason installed hot water, high pressure heating systems in numerous mills and other large buildings, including the White House in 1853. The Boston branch became J.J. Walworth & Co. in 1852 and was reorganized as the Walworth Manufacturing Co. in 1872. The diaries date from 1828-94, with gaps for 1835, 1838-45, 1862, 1865, 1871, and 1888-93. The letterbooks containing retained copies of personal and business correspondence date from 1845-50 and 1871-93. Correspondents include Joseph Nason, R.H. Peters, Henry R. Worthington, C. Clark Walworth, and other Walworth family members.
